POLYAMIDE is the generic name for all long-chain molecules with recurring amide groups. A characteristic feature of the polyamide resins are the amide groups (-CO-HN-) which, due to their polar structure, react easily with water molecules, what further leads to the high water absorption of polyamides, giving them unique properties. Water i.e. moisture acts as a plasticizer on polyamides and thus reducing tensile modulus and increasing impact resistance.
Thanks to their crystalline structure polyamides are easy to inject, showing high fluidity. This is particularly appreciated when injecting thin-walled parts. Due to their moisture sensitivity, polyamides require efficient drying process. Insufficient drying will lead to splays and unaesthetic marks on part surfaces, as well as lower mechanical properties due to material degradation (heat and water lead to oxidation).
Both Polyamide 6 (PA6) and Polyamide 66 (PA66) are used in many different markets and applications due to their very good performance/cost ratios. They are the most used polyamide ever. Although they have similar properties some slight differences also exists.
Inspite of widespread common opinion that the PA66 would display a higher continuous service temperature and better ageing resistance than PA6, since its melting point was approx. 40 °C higher, apparently PA6 is as stiff as PA66 within temperatures up to 180°C and also exhibits a better long-term heat ageing than PA66. Additionally, PA6 is less expensive than PA66 in term of basic costs and provides a better surface appearance ( the slower solidification rate of PA 6 makes it possible to achieve parts with a good surface and less warpage). Moisture absorption of PA6 is higher than of PA 6.6 (because of its chemical structure) what further leads to slightly better PA6 impact properties at low temperatures and lower resistance to chemicals comparing to PA6.6.
