Polycarbonate is an amorphous engineering thermoplastic, characterized by transparency, excellent toughness, outstanding mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, and a very good dimensional stability.
PC is most often synthesized in process called condensation polymerization of bisphenol A and phosgene.
A polycarbonate molecule is composed by a bisphenol A part and a carbonate group (from which the name comes) .
The bisphenol A group also contributes to PC’s inability to crystallize. On the other hand this amorphous structure gives the polymer its particular transparency, excellent mechanical properties and high dimensional stability. The characteristic high glass transition temperature (Tg = 145ºC) of PC is caused by the minimal molecular rotation about the bonds.
Polycarbonate has limited chemical and scratch resistance and it has tendency to yellow upon long term exposure to UV light. However these constraints can be readily overcome by adding the proper additives. As an amorphous thermoplastic it is soluble in moderately polar organic solvents. Intrinsically, with slow burning rate, it’s flame retardant characteristics could be improved by adding right additives.

ALM KOMPAUNDI DOO has a wide range of different polycarbonate grades directly from its warehouses.
